Dr. Georgi Lozanov, Researcher and Advisor to Pars Omni

Prof. Dr. Georgi Lozanov, M.D., is a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy. He has dedicated his life to researching the reserves of the human personality. In addition to his clinical work, he has conducted extensive theoretical and experimental research in the areas of psychotherapy, physiology and related fields, especially as they relate to pedagogy. The product of this work has been the organization of a body of knowledge which constitutes a science of suggestion-called "suggestology." A notable outcome of this research has been the systematic development of a method known as Suggestopedia, by which the learning of ordinary subject matter can be greatly accelerated.

His thesis, Medical and Pedagogical Applications of Suggestion, has been published by Gordon and Breach, 1978 - 1989, under the title Suggestology and the Outlines of Suggestopedia. It is an investigation of the application of suggestion and psychotherapy to the educational process with the goals of accelerating learning on the level of the reserve capacities while promoting the harmonious development of the personality.

Lozanov began his research on the reserves of the human personality more than 30 years ago and in 1966 began his collaboration with Dr. Evelyna Gateva, who introduced art, music and dance into the teaching system. He was the founder of the Research Institute for Suggestology in Sofia and its director for many years. He was also the director of the Centre for Suggestology at Sofia University and has been guest speaker at universities and institutes in Europe, Asia and America.

Because of political developments during the Cold War, much of his research was suppressed, and what little was available to the Western world became modified and diluted, divorcing itself from teaching at the level of the reserve capacities. With the fall of the iron curtain, he has now been able to take up research and to train trainers once again.

Dr. Lozanov is author of several books on human potential with application to teaching, medical treatment and management. He has developed some original psychotherapeutical methods and has developed a psycho-hygienic "Desuggestive Mental Training" for healthy people. He currently resides in Vienna, Austria and directs the International Centre for Desuggestology.
