Take Your Spanish Speaking Ability to a New Level
Admission into the Proficiency Course requires successful completion of the Foundation Course; this requirement is waived for those who already possess sufficient knowledge and conversational ability. The emphasis continues to be on the development of speaking and comprehension skills, with a broadening exposure to idiomatic expression. The students now engage in longer, spontaneous conversational interactions. More complex grammatical structures are added. Total active vocabulary is extended to between 2,500 and 3,000 words; passive understanding to between 4,000 and 5,000 words.
The Course consists of 60 instructional hours, delivered in 20 3-hour class sessions with 6 to 12 students. The method used is essentially the same one used in the Foundation course, but with some significant modifications due to the fact that students entering the Proficiency course are already able to converse in Spanish.
As in the Foundation course, most of the learning takes place in the classroom. There are a few outside assignments in the Proficiency course, approximately one for each 4 class sessions.
The major goals of the Proficiency course are:
Teaching students to converse within the context of a 4000+ word vocabulary and the complete grammatical structure of Spanish
Introducing students to using and understanding everyday idiomatic expressions and speech
Getting students to the level of 'independence' where they are confident and able enough to easily learn more Spanish in life situations on their own
At the end of the course, students have a solid proficiency in speaking and understanding Spanish in any everyday context. The course can be customized to fit individual, professional needs.
